After the Spanish conquest, parcels of land were gifted to Spanish Noblemen. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Haciendas were built on much of this land in order to produce henequen. This agave plant was also referred to as the ‘Green Gold’. It was harvested and used to produce a fiber for rope that was sold around the world. The fiber was shipped out of the nearby port of Sisal, which is how this fiber came to be known worldwide. All hacienda restoration, including the design and construction of Casa Sisal, has been a project of the renowned Mexican architect Salvador Reyes Rios and his partner and wife Josefina Larrain. Most of the furniture is designed by Salvador and fabricated locally. Throughout the hacienda, there is evidence of its previous utilitarian life. Iron wheels, massive beams, dramatic stone archways, and even a water tower converted into a modern bathroom, are all remnants of its past. The old house is stunning and the modern Casa Sisal is a total marvel. Perfectly laid out, it seamlessly works with the Yucatecan landscape. It's the perfect mix of modern, luxurious, rustic, and minimalist. It's just so soothing. The great lawn between the two is the perfect spot to have kiddos run around or to get some exercise in or just feel a sense of vastness in the middle of a dense jungle. The entire property lights up with fireflies at dusk and feels like a fairytale. Finally, the staff... They do a two and a half-hour guided tour. After the tour of the main house you will get onto the horse-drawn platforms and take a ride into the henequén fields. Along the way, they will stop off at a Mayan home where you will be shown the simple daily life of the Mayas. The last stop on the ride takes you to a cenote where you can swim. There are changing rooms and towels provided. Several blocks away are more archaeological sites with hieroglyphs that you can climb. Ask around for the Temple of the Stuccoes, which is about four blocks away. This walled city has 4,000 mounds, of which six are in different stages of advanced restoration. Mayapán is the size of Chichén Itzá, and you will find the buildings are similar. Visiting this site allows you to observe many mounds in their original state (covered with trees) and to see others in transformation with the archeologists actually working on them. Mayapán is considered the last great Mayan capital. You can climb the pyramids here. Mama is famous for its large beautiful bell-globed church containing a large garden, a well, and a closed atrium along with frescos on the wall, statues of saints in the niches, and a very ornate altar. It is believed this is the oldest church on the route. Here you can see the Temple of Immaculate Conception built in the XVI century. This is an example of the medieval religious architecture brought to Yucatán by the first Spaniards. This is the place where Fray Diego de Landa ordered the burning and destruction of many Mayan statues and documents during the Franciscan movement to convert the indigenous peoples to Christianity. They destroyed 5000 idols, 13 altars, 27 deerskin parchments, and 197 vessels of varying shapes and sizes. Upon realizing his great error, Fray Diego began to write everything he could recall. An antique wooden buggy cart pulled by a horse is the mode of transportation used as you travel through a sisal plantation with three refreshing cenotes along the way. We suggest you go on a weekday to avoid crowds. You simply drive to Cuzama and turn right at the Plaza and travel down that road toward the hacienda and stop when you see carts. Someone will quickly adopt you and take you away! Bring towels, bug spray and snacks and wear shoes that are good for going up and down a ladder. Fear of heights is not recommended. This is a 2-3 hour trip. It tends to get a little busy on weekends. To get to Dzibilchaltún, take the Merida Periferico north and then turn right onto the Mérida-Progreso highway north. After 11 km you will see the sign to turn right.
